"BioBlitz" (Premiere of a Documentary Film by the Meewasin Valley Authority)

Cynthia Girling

The Meewasin Valley Authority is a conservation organization dedicated to conserving the cultural and natural resources of the South Saskatchewan River Valley. Meewasin has three mandates to conserve, to develop and to educate. In order to better understand the importance of Saskatoon's Northeast Swale, for two days in May 2011, Meewasin brought together 9 teams of scientists and the education community to host the Meewasin Northeast Swale EcoBlitz. The 24 minute documentary produced by Tom Simes of TommyBrook creations and written and narrated by Meewasin's Doug Porteous highlights the area as a rich nature preserve with Saskatoon rapidly expanding around it. The message given is that the challenge for Meewasin and the City of Saskatoon is how best to manage and protect the area, not by fencing it off, buy by conserving and providing public access to it with a sound management plan.
