Design Statement
In 1984 the historic MacCleod's Building was gutted to create a double-height nightclub, followed by ten years as a stereo store. 1984 also witnessed the launch of the first Macintosh computer. Starting with a single Mac, zu has grown their business to become a web solutions provider to major national clients. Zu's elegant graphics are supported by thoughtful analysis and meticulous programming to create work that will endure.

The integrated design preserves character defining features while providing flexible infrastructure ready to grow with the owner. Windows covered over since the Eighties have been restored, including the original entrance. Overhead lines have been placed underground alongside a new T1 internet pipeline. Mechanical and electrical systems have been completely renewed to protect critical server equipment. Unsightly ducts and conduits on upper storeys have been replaced by pressurized service floors. Sprinklers have been decommissioned as permitted by the new occupancy.

Interior fit-ups provide a playful, colourful, clutter-free environment for creative staff. The floor area has been carefully layered to provide ample daylight and views from occupied areas. Group workspaces can easily be recognized. Private offices can be rearranged thanks to a modular, moveable wall system. Floor services can be relocated by occupants. "Found objects" and vestigial spaces created by the 14" raised service floors have become ideal collaboration hubs.

Zu's anchor project is a bellwether of upcoming improvements to the warehouse district. 303 Pacific will serve its creative community well into the 21st century.
